Tenant satisfaction survey widens

In previous surveys, customers said they thought double-glazing was important. As a result, by April 2015, the council aims to have replaced all single glazed timber windows with UPVC double glazed windows, except in conservation areas where secondary double-glazing will be fitted. The survey has also influenced the development of the council’s anti-social behaviour strategy

What are Fascias?

The fascia is mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house and is often called the ROOFLINE. However most people refer to it by the name of the main board that carries the gutter – the fascia or fascias.

Unfortunately, not many people are familiar with these terms, so we thought you might appreciate a few words of explanation.

Fascia

The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. The fascia is fixed directly to the roof trusses and usually does all the work of supporting the bottom row of tiles and carrying all the guttering.

This is no mean feat, especially when it is raining hard. In a downpour the roof of a 3-bed semi could be washing several gallons of water per second into its gutters.

Bargeboard

This is the board that is used on the gable end of a house. The condition of the bargeboard can often make or break the look of a house, and over the years it has evolved into some very attractive shapes.

Soffit

The soffit board is tucked away under the fascia board. It is usually the board that you see most of from street level. The soffit can be ventilated to allow the flow of air into the roof area. Alternatively ventilation can be provided over the top of the fascia board. Many people prefer the latter solution these days. Without adequate ventilation, condensation will form in the roof void increasing the risk of timber decay.

Boxend

The Box End is a work of art, accommodating as it does the many different angles, planes and heights of the fascia, soffit and bargeboard at each corner of the house where there is a gable end.

CE Markings Swish

Swish cladding profiles now carry the CE marking in compliance with the Construction Products Regulation 2011. Since 1st July 2013 it has been mandatory for manufacturers to apply the CE marking to any of their products which are covered by a harmonised European Standard (hEN).

The marking is on the back of the boards and will have

  • the words “Pvc-Ue Profile For External Wall/Ceiling Finishes”,
  • the CE mark
  • EN 13245-2:2008 (the harmonised standard)
  • The date of manufacture and line number

Gallows & Corbel

Swish Gallows Brackets are load bearing and capable of offering structural support to door and window canopies. The surface pattern mimics the traditional appearance of timber with a high level of bevelling detail.

The Feature Corbel has sharply defined sweeping curves which are most effectivewhen installed below a flat top canopy or used in pairs beneath oriel windows.

Dentils

Decorative Dentil mouldings add elegance to the eaves of any property, creating individual architectural detailing. The range includes a choice of 4 sizes, and differing designs.

All Weather Roofline use Swish Dentils, which provide an excellent means of adding both decoration and value to a property. The range meets the requirements of most new build and refurbishment applications. Each unit is capable of a secret mechanical fix in at least one direction through a built in footplate. The orientation and spacing are worth careful consideration in order to achieve the best effect. In addition, a continuous sub-fascia of cellular PVC fixed to the wall under the soffit will greatly enhance the effect.

Through Fascia Ventilation

All Weather Roofline use The Polo™ range of ventilated soffit boards provides the equivalent of a 10mm or 25mmnair path as required.

Strip ventilators allow additional or alternative means of ventilation to the roof void. These are designed to fit Swish 9mm GeePee™ soffits and are available in both 10mm and 25mm configurations.

More people choose PVC-U windows than any other framing material. Some 85% of homes in the UK are estimated to have them.

For years many have chosen PVC-U window frames because they are great to look at, affordable and never need painting. Today, however, with climate change issues in mind, it also makes good sense to choose PCV-U windows and doors.

There are more A energy rated PVC-U windows than other framing material. And PVC windows score top marks in the BRE Green Guide for sustainability and they are recyclable.

Although little known, PVC-U from old windows can now be used to make new windows as well as other items. Plus PVC-U can be recycled not once, but up to 10 times.

Design-wise, PVC-U is by far the most versatile framing material. Frame designs can equally suit traditional-style buildings, modern architecture and low-energy consuming homes. And they always look good – no peeling paint, no rusty bits, no paint on windows and there are loads of styles to choose from.

Guttering

Swish Rainwater Systems are ideal for those who wish to specify quality products that have a reduced carbon footprint. They are unique in the UK in that they contain a high proportion of post consumer recycled PVC.

Approximately 84% by weight of gutters and pipes is composed of recycled material that is derived from old PVC windows and gutter systems that have been removed from buildings when being refurbished or demolished.

The production of PVC components from recycled material requires a fraction of the energy needed to manufacture virgin PVC and so 70% saving in CO2 output is made during the production of Swish gutter and pipe profiles when compared to production of 100% virgin material.
